Colossians
Author and Title:
Because
of the greetings in 1:2, Colossians became known as Pros Kolossaeis, “To the
Colossians.” As with the other epistles of Paul surveyed thus far, both the
external and internal evidence strongly support Paul’s authorship. But the
authorship of this epistle has been doubted by some on the grounds of the
vocabulary and the nature of the heresy refuted in this epistle. Expositor’s
Bible Commentary has an excellent summary of the key issues involving the
authorship and date of Colossians.
That
Colossians is a genuine letter of Paul is not usually disputed. In the early
church, all who speak on the subject of authorship ascribe it to Paul. In the
19th century, however, some thought that the heresy refuted in ch. 2 was
second-century Gnosticism. But a careful analysis of ch. 2 shows that the
heresy there referred to is noticeably less developed than the Gnosticism of
leading Gnostic teachers of the second and third centuries. Also, the seeds of
what later became the full-blown Gnosticism of the second century were present
in the first century and already making inroads into the churches.
Consequently, it is not necessary to date Colossians in the second century at a
time too late for Paul to have written the letter. Instead,
it is to be dated during Paul’s first imprisonment in Rome, where he spent at
least two years under house arrest (see Ac 28:16-31).58
Date: A.D. 61
Paul
wrote all four prison epistles during his first Roman imprisonment. This means
he wrote it in A.D. 60-61 (see the discussion on the date of Ephesians and
Philippians).
Theme and Purpose:
The
theme is the fruitful and effective power of the gospel message which heralds
the supremacy, headship, and the utter sufficiency of Christ to the church
which is His body. In this little epistle, we see Paul’s “full-length portrait
of Christ.”59 Colossians demonstrates that because of all that Jesus Christ is
in His person and has accomplished in His work, He, as the object of the
believer’s faith, is all we need for in Him we are complete (2:10). In scope,
Colossians presents the all supremacy, all sufficiency, uniqueness, and the
fullness of the person and work of Jesus Christ as the God-man Savior, the
Creator and Sustainer of the universe, and the total solution for man’s needs
both for time and eternity. It is a cosmic book, presenting the cosmic Christ:
the Creator/Sustainer and Redeemer/Reconciler of man and all the universe.
Key Words:
Key
words in this book are “supremacy” and “sufficiency.”
Key Verses:
1. 1:15-20.
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation, 1:16 for
all things in heaven and on earth were created by him—all things, whether
visible or invisible, whether thrones or dominions, whether principalities or
powers—all things were created through him and for him. 1:17 He himself is before
all things and all things are held together in him. 1:18 He is the head of the
body, the church, as well as the beginning, the firstborn from among the dead
so that he himself may become first in all things. 1:19 For God was pleased to
have all his fullness dwell in him 1:20 and through him to reconcile all things
to himself by making peace through the blood of his cross—whether things on the
earth or things in heaven.
2. 2:8-10.
Be careful not to allow anyone to captivate you through an empty, deceitful
philosophy that is according to human traditions and the elemental spirits of
the world, and not according to Christ. 2:9 For in him all the fullness of
deity lives in bodily form 2:10 and you have been filled in him, who is the
head over every ruler and authority.
3. 3:1-3.
Therefore, if you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things above,
where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 3:2 Keep thinking about
things above, not things on the earth, 3:3 for you have died and your life is
hidden with Christ in God.
Key Chapters:
Chapters
2 is key in that it demonstrates why and how the believer is complete in Christ
and needs nothing added to the saving person and work of Christ. Chapter 3 then
builds on this as root to fruit or cause and effect. Because believers are
complete in Christ (2:10) and are thereby risen with Him, they now have all
they need for Christ-like transformation in all the relationships of life
(3:1f.).
Christ As Seen In Colossians:
Wilkinson
and Boa points out:
This
singularly Christological book is centered on the cosmic Christ—“the head of
all principality and power” (2:10), the Lord of creation (1:16-17), the Author
of reconciliation (1:20-22; 2:13-15). He is the basis for the believer’s hope
(1:5, 23, 27), the source of the believer’s power for a new life (1:11, 29),
the believer’s Redeemer and Reconciler (1:14, 20-22; 2:11-15), the embodiment
of full Deity (1:15, 19; 2:9), the Creator and Sustainer of all things
(1:16-17), the Head of the church (1:18), the resurrected God-Man (1:18; 3:1),
and the all-sufficient Savior (1:28; 2:3, 20; 3:1-4).60

Delete*Text: Colossians 1:19 – 2:3*
*Introduction*
Jesus was sent by the Father to live among men and to die for our sins. Through the offering of His sinless life, He purchased for us salvation, reconciling us back to fellowship with the Father. His work, being perfect, is sufficient for us in all things. This is the good news we are bound to preach!
*1. The Description of His Work*
• Redemption – bought back from the legitimate power of sin and death (1:14, 21)
• Reconciliation – peace with God (1:22)
• Restoration – the place of dominion (1:13)
*2. The Application of His Work*
To appropriate His finished work on our behalf, we need to understand what His has done and believe in Him as well as the potency and sufficiency of His sacrifice. We access the efficacy of His perfect work through faith (1:4, 23). His work wrought the following for us:
• Blamelessness of the Believer (v. 22)
• Acceptance of the Believer (v. 22)
• Eternal Hope of the Believer (vv.23, 27)
*3. The Propagation of His Work*
The finished work of Christ is propagated through preaching the gospel.
• Preaching the gospel involves voluntary sacrifice
• Preaching engenders persecution and suffering
• Preaching builds up the saints.
• Preaching is based on sound revelation.
*Conclusion*
As God-man, Jesus was the perfect sacrifice for the sin of mankind and His finished work is eternally sufficient for us. He bought us back from sin and reconciled us with the Father, thereby, restoring us to our original place of dominion. We key into all that He has done for us through faith, and having experienced the goodness and mercy of God through Him, we are obliged to extend the news to others so that they might partake of the same eternal hope with us.

THE SERMON
ReplyDeleteTopic: Work of Christ
Text: Colossians 1:19-2:3
Bible Version Used: NLT
Sermon Outline:
1. The Description of His Work
This talks about the redemptive work of Christ accomplished by shedding His precious blood on the Cross for the forgiveness and remission of mankind's sin. Christ was not a sinner, according to 2 Corinthians 5v21 which says "For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ." From this scripture, Christ submitted to the will of God by becoming the supreme sacrifice for man redemption - "And God in all fullness was pleased to live in Christ, and through Him, God reconciled everything to Himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ's blood on the cross."
2. The Application of His Work:
Colossians 1:21-22 state "This include you who were once far away from God. You were His enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions, yet now He has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in His physical body. As a result, He has brought you into His own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before Him without a single fault." These scriptures reveal how the work of Christ becomes applicable to believers. When he became the ultimate sacrifice, He did it for us, so that we can come to God's presence holy, blameless and without a single fault. This means that our righteousness is not of our own but Christ's. We are saved by grace through Christ Jesus. Nobody can take credit for it.
3. The Propagation of His Work:
Colossians 1:23,25-28 say "But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don't drift away from the assurance you received when you heeded the Good News. The Good News has been preached all over the world, and I, Paul, have been appointed as God's servant to proclaim it...God has given me the responsibility of serving his church by proclaiming His entire message to you. This message was kept secret for centuries and generations past, but now it has been revealed to God's people. For God wanted them to know that the riches and glory of Christ are for you Gentiles, too. And this is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing His glory. So we tell others about, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all the wisdom God has given us. We want to present them to God, perfect in their relationship to Christ." From the scriptures above, apostle Paul was saddled with the responsibility of propagating this Good News, and by extension, this responsibility becomes ours to preach the Good News as well. We are to do it by warning everyman and teaching everyone with all the wisdom God has given us. This is pleasing to God when we are actively engaged in it. We should not in anyway shy away from this divine responsibility!

BRIEF SERMON
ReplyDeleteTOPIC: THE WORK OF CHRIST
TEXT: COLOSSIANS 1:19-23
INTRODUCTION:
What a great privilege to be a Christian, saved by grace through the work of Jesus Christ. The good and gracious life we life is imputed upon us by Jesus and this sort of life can not be found in any religion of the world.
I. THE DESCRIPTION OF HIS WORK (VS 19-20)
A. The Fullness Vs 19:
Jesus Christ has accomplished His mission on earth. This is based on the truth of His last words on earth saying "It is finished" John 19:30. The price of salvation has been paid for in full, thereby salvation is found in no other means or scheme. In addition, the work of Jesus is heralded in His virgin birth, sinless and perfect life, atoning death, glorious resurrection and ascension.
B. The Reconciliation (Vs 20): Having died and paid the cost of salvation by shedding His own blood on the cross of Calvary, Jesus brought the reconciliation of peace between God and man. Man is thus granted direct access to the Father because the work of Jesus has bridged the gulf between the two parties. Therefore Jesus is described as the Mediator of reconciliation who procures peace as well as pardon for all sinners.
II. THE APPLICATION OF HIS WORK (VS 21-22)
A. Friendship (Vs 21): By nature of sin, man is an enemy of God. The work of Jesus when applied restores the state of friendship between God and man. Believers become heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ
B. State of Perfection ( Vs 22): When the work of Christ is applied, then we become holy, unblamable and unreprovable before judgement under the wrath of God. There is no power of hell, no condemnation of sin and no scheme of man can pluck out the believer from God's kingdom when the great work of Christ is applied.
III. THE PROPAGATION OF HIS WORK (Vs 23)
A. Steadfastness: To be grounded and settled in the works of Christ is to remain steadfast and unremovable from the doctrine. The believer should not be tossed about by every wind of doctrines but be diligent in studying the scriptures to show himself approved unto God. The life is thus transformed and reflect the essence of Christ's work
B. Proclamation: The preaching of the gospel of the good works of Jesus is given to every believer as a divine mandate (Matth 28:18-20). All believers should have this sense of responsibility and communion as a minister to herald the works of Jesus. Our body language, lifestyle and vocal expressions should proclaim this good work every blessed day of our lives.
CONCLUSION:
The works of Jesus Christ in its fullness is complete, unique, supreme, sufficient and perfect for the whole universe and total solution for man's problems

Sermon on The Work of Christ
Text: Colossians 1:19-2:3
Introduction
The essence of Christ work is to put an end to the effect of sins in mankind through the sacrifice He made on the cross. He died that man may have abundant life and this is the basis of His present work and His future work. No one can fathom the extend of this great work, precious and priceless of that work in which the Christ offered Himself through the eternal Spirit without spot unto God! He procured redemption by His death on the cross.

10 salient points summarized from the commentary
1. Paul wrote the book of Colossians in AD 61 during his imprisonment in Rome.
2. Paul wrote to the Christians who lived in the city called colossae after he had received a report that they had begin to listen to false teachers and they were struggling with christological heresy.
3. Paul was worried that Christians would turn away from the true gospel because the church at colossae was under attack from false teachers who were denigrating the deity of Jesus Christ. They were teaching that Jesus Christ was not actually God.
4. Paul wrote to the Christians at colossae to remind them about Jesus Christ and about His true message, also to bring his wisdom to bear on this difficult and trying situation at the church in colossae. He reminded the Christians that their past life had gone and Christ was now their life.
5. Paul presented Christ as the center of the universe, not only as the active creator but also as the recipient of creation. Christ was and is the visible imaga of the invisible God, containing with Himself the fullness of deity because of His divine nature.
6.Jesus is sovereign above all things with an authority given to him by the father, He has reconciled His death on the cross, making believers alive to God and setting them on the path to right living. Christ served as the antidote for the Colossian heresy as a building block for Christian life and doctrine both then and now.
7. In this little commentary of Colossians, we see Paul's full length portrait of Christ. Colossians demonstrates that because of all that Jesus Christ is in person and has accomplished in His work, He as the object of the believers faith, is all we need for in Him.
8. The key words in this book are supremacy and sufficiency.
9. The key chapter is chapter 2 in that it demonstrates why and how the believer is complete in Christ and needs nothing added to saving person and work of Christ. This singularly christological book is centered on the cosmic Christ as the head of all principality and power, the believers Redeemer and reconciler.
10. Colossians presents the all supremacy, all sufficiency, uniqueness and the fullness of the person and work of Jesus Christ as the God man saviour.

Sermon
Topic : the work of Christ
Text : Colossians 1 v 19 - 23
Introduction
The great work which the Lord Jesus Christ came to do was to put away sin by sacrifice of himself. This finished work of the cross is the basis of His present work and His future work. He procured redemption by His death on the cross. In His present work and much more in the future work. He works out this great redemption into result. The lord Jesus Christ will reign over the earth, He work have a kingdom of glory of righteousness and peace on this earth, the nation of the earth will have to submit to His government, but all this is still to come.
Sermon outline
I. The description of His work
A.His incarnation.
Incarnation means more than the mere assumption of human body.it was a voluntary act on Jesus Christ part, He who existed from all eternity in form of God, Himself of the outward appearance of Deity and took upon Him the likeness of sinful flesh in the form of a servant and for sin, He humbled Himself still lower becoming obedient into death, death on the cross.(Heb 2:14)
B. His Resurrection
It is through His resurrection that we know God is satisfied with the work that His son accomplished when He took our place in judgment and bare our sins in His own body upon the cross. He was delivered for our offenses, and was raised again for our justified by His resurrection, but it is what His resurrection proves that the work which justifies has been accomplished and we came into the benefit of it when we put out true in the risen one.
C. His Advocacy
His work in Glory in the presence of God for His people is Advocacy. He is our advocate with the father. The Lord's intercession as advocate is independent of our repentance. It is the exercise of grace in His own loving heart toward us to restore our souls, to put us back into the place where we can enjoy His fellowship.
II. The application of His work.
All Christian service is based on the finished work of Christ. The early apostles did not go around preaching a Gospel of works or a message of believers needing to do so much to enter heaven but rather all godly living was not of appreciation of the mercy of God
When we get to know that Christ is eminent and He reconciles us to Him, we will start to see how important our commitment to honour Christ and His precepts are. Now with Christ , we have salvation, assurance and an eternity of hope and can now start to really build and rebuild the people back to a godly direction of making disciples. It is His fullness in us. it is to be our passion and directive to lead Christians to grow in Him and into His way and away from false perceptions. We must allow His work in us,live in His presence be a doer of the work ,stand firm in our faith and teachings and never drift away from His true truth and His love.
III.The propagation
Jesus Christ propagates Himself through His believers to produce the churches as the kingdom of God on earth. Jesus Christ who changed the course of history, over turned empires, revolutionised the human living, lived a life of the highest morality, died in a shameful way on the cross, was resurrected by God and ascended to heaven. Jesus Christ now works as the head of the body through all members of body to propagate Himself all over the earth of the raising up of the local churches as the kingdom of God on earth.Christ administrates the entire universe for God's purpose and carries out God's. Christ work of propagation , After He inaugurated as the Lord of all and Christ poured Himself forth as the Holy spirit upon His believers to be the power for them to propagate the resurrected Christ all of the earth ( Acts 1:8). The result of the propagation of the resurrected Christ in His ascension is the churches ( Acts 13 : 1 ).
Conclusion
The works of Jesus Christ in its fullness is complete, supreme ,sufficient and perfect for the whole universe.

TOPIC: THE WORK OF CHRIST
TEXT: Colossian 1:19 – 29, 2:1 – 3
INTRODUCTION
Jesus the second person of the trinity, the incarnated God. He came to earth to do a great work of reconciliation, restoring the alienated man back to God.
The work of Christ under the context of this message will be discussed under the following sub-headings:
1. THE DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK (Colossians 1vs 19-22)
Jesus is the embodiment and the fullness and totality of God. He brought salvation to mankind, making peace by His blood through His death on the cross, thereby reconciling man unto Himself.
Man had alienated, estranged and living in enmity with God. We have subjected ourselves in doing the will of the devil as against God’s will and purpose for mankind. Christ in His love (John 3 vs 16) through His death on the cross librated and presented us blameless and faultless before God.
2. THE APPLICATION OF THE WORK (Colossians 1vs 23)
We have been called unto a right living with Christ and the truth have been revealed unto us. We are to continue and keep growing in the faith without compromise.
Verse 23 of Colossians chapter 1 gives us four salient points to be mindful of;
a. We are to continue in the faith
b. We must be stable
c. We must be steadfast
d. We must not shift from the hope of the gospel we have received.
3. THE PROPERGATION OF HIS WORK (COLOSSIAN 1 VS 23–29, 2 VS 2-3)
The mandate given to the church is to spread the gospel in its fullness to the world (Mathew 28:18-23). This is the focus of the ministry of Paul and the reason he worked hard that the gospel be spread abroad.
It is all about Jesus Christ, we must work hard to spread the gospel to the world helping them to grow spiritually unto maturity, revealing to them the glorious riches of the mystery of God s had been revealed to us.
As Christian, we must not be discourage in caring out the mandate laid in our hands no matter the opposition we face or the circumstances that surround us. We should carry out the works of the Father with joy and enthusiasm. Amidst trials and tribulation, Paul was standing and never discourage (Colossian 1:24, Romans 8:35-39).

ReplyDelete10 points of summary of collosians
1) Paul wrote to the collosians because the church there has been infiltrated by false teachers who told them that believing in Jesus Christ alone for redemption is not enough. So they mixed human philosophy and tradition with the gospel. So Paul refutes this heresy by telling them that Christ is not only our personal saviour but also the head of the church and the Lord of the universe and creation.
2)He told them about the will of God which is through praying and remaining in His Word and fellowship will Him.And also encourage them to always pray for each other.
3) They should be strengthen with His glorious power,as only this can enable them to overcome sin, Satan and the world.
4) That all things are created by Him,in Him and were hold and sustained together by Him.
5) Paul warns to guard against all philosophie, religious and traditios of human being acting against or independently from God and His written Words and revelations.
6) Paul talks about circumsicion which indicates cutting away or separation from sin and all that that was unholy to the world.
7) He told them that Christ have spoiled all the demonic powers and principalities by His death on the cross and they should not be hold under the law of not eaten or drinking certain things.
8) Paul spoke with the parents to lead and nuture the children in the way of the Lord. He teaches them how children should be established, encouraged, instructed spiritually, that their real home and citizenship is in heaven with Christ.
9) He also spoke to the wives, servants, masters and also children to obey thier parents in the Lord as this is the will of God for His church.
10)He ended with greetings, grace and that a believer must be pleasant in speech, being gracious and remember to take care of the ministry that is been assigned.
BRIEF SERMON ON THE WORK OF CHRIST.Christ came for our redemption,he has supremacy over every authority, we were circumsired,i.e being freed from the power of this sinful self.Baptised with Christ,we are Dead and been raised with him through faith in the power of God who raised him from the dead.We were authomatically to forgiveness through Christ, not through our work or doings. Our unfavorable record of debts were completely cancelled by nailing it to the cross. We have died with Christ and have been set free through his resurrection and Free from the ruling spirit of the universe. We have been raised with Christ and our mind should be set on the things of heaven where Christ sat on his throne at the right side of God.Our real life is Christ, so when he appears,we will appear with him in glory.Every earthly desire in us must be put to death.

Topic: THE WORK OF CHRIST
Text: Colossians 1:19-2:3
The work of Christ are the things he did for us, how he suffered, died was buried and rose so that we can have life. He was disgraced so we won’t face shame again, became poor us to be rich and swallowed death up in victory.
OUTLINES
1. The Description of His Work (Colossians 1:20):
The work of Christ can be described as sacrificial, because he lay down his life, shedding his blood for the remission of our sins so that we can be holy, perfect and without blame and sin before God. He died so we can live.
2. The Application of His Work (Colossians 1:23):
We have been made perfect before God by the work of redemption of Christ; we can now access God which is the end to which he died. However, our responsibility should be that we should not drift away from the assurance we received when we heard the Gospel. Hold fast to the word of God and let it bear fruits in you.
3. The Propagation of His Work (Colossians 1:24): The Gospel of God we heard should be preached to others, reconcile men to God, preach the sufferings of Christ, so others can be a partaker in God’s Kingdom. Paul said “as I am participating in the sufferings of Christ, God has given me the responsibility of serving his church by proclaiming his entire message to you”. So also we have been giving the ministry of reconciliation.
CONCLUSION:
The work of Christ is encapsulated in his death, burial and resurrection. His death paid for our sins, and his resurrection gives us life. So embrace the life of God and spread it to others.
SUMMARY OF THE COMMENTARY ON COLOSSIANS
ReplyDeleteBY BADEJO OLUBUNMI . A
1. Colossians is a “singularly Christological book” centered on the cosmic Christ according to Wilkinson and Boa; In other word, the book presented Jesus as 100% God and 100% human.
2. The theme of Paul’s epistle to the Colossians is the fruitful and effective power of the gospel, while the purpose is to emphasize the supremacy, headship, and the utter sufficiency of Christ as the essence as well as the most essential to the body of Christ-the Church.
3. In scope, Colossians addressed concerns such as the supremacy, sufficiency, uniqueness, and the fullness of the person and work of Jesus Christ as the God-man saviour, creator, and sustainer of the universe.
4. One of the internal and external evidences in the epistle of Paul to the Colossians is the greetings and the particular mention of the recipients of the epistle as the Colossians, which also helped in naming the epistle.
5. The agreement on the genuineness of Paul’s authorship is supported by both internal and external evidences which included the early church.
6. There were opposing views on Paul’s authorship of Colossians, especially in the 19th century. However, those who objected to Paul’s authorship of Colossians then based their objection on the heresy that was refuted in chapter 2, which to them, was similar to the 2nd century Gnosticism.
7. The opposing views to Paul’s authorship of Colossians, particularly those of the 19th century were knocked off firstly based on the fact that the heresy addressed by Paul was less developed than the Gnosticism propagated by the leading Gnostic teachers of the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Secondly, on the fact that the seeds of the 2nd century full blown Gnosticism was already creeping into the church as of the time of Paul’s writing of the Colossians.
8. The date of writing of Colossians is put at A.D 61, and it is believed that it couldn’t have been later than the 1st century and the period of Paul’s first Roman imprisonment during which he wrote his four prison epistles which includes Colossians, others are Ephesians, Philippians, and Philemon.
9. The key chapters are 2 and 3. Chapter 2 reveals why and how the believers are complete in Christ while chapter 3 states the effects of the completion of believers in Christ, such as Christ –like transformation in all relationships of life.
10. Above all, Colossians sheds light on the person of Christ, and His work. It also contain advice against yielding to heretical teachings, while encouraging adherence to true doctrines through practical daily living as believers.

ReplyDeleteTOPIC: THE WORK OF CHRIST
TEXT: COLOSSIANS 1:19-2:3
INTRODUCTION: Jesus Christ came to the world with a purpose in sight. He was God, yet He put on humanity in order to have the right capacity to accomplish His mission which was geared towards his vision for mankind that is to reconcile them back to God- to close the gap that came about as a result of the broken relationship between God and man because of SIN. His mission was to die and shed His blood on the cross for the remission of the sin of mankind (Hebrews 9:22) through death on the cross, all in the bid to save the world, these encapsulate the ushering in of the climax of the work of Christ (Colossians 1:19-20).
I. THE DESCRIPTION OF HIS WORK
The work of Jesus Christ can be described in the following ways;
A. His sufficiency: Jesus Christ worked as the source, supplier, sustainer, and embodiment of provision, strength, and encouragement for believers. He is the link to the Father (Colossians 1:19).
B. His sacrifice: Jesus Christ, through His death and shedding of His blood on the cross brings about peace and the reconciliation of all of humanity to God (Colossians 1: 20 -21), for as many as receive Him (John1:12). He is the peace maker and the reconciler, a work He also committed to all believers in Him (2 Corinthians 5:18)
C. His sustenance: The ultimate of the work of Jesus Christ through His death on the cross is to present the believers holy, blameless, and above reproach in the sight of God the Father. This however, according to Paul, can be achieved only with the cooperation of the individual believer (Colosians1:22-23)
II. THE APPLICATION OF HIS WORK
The work of Christ is applicable to all mankind, irrespective of their race, education, status, background, or past deeds (Colossians1:21) and are reflected in the following ways;
A. Reconciliation: The work of Christ brings about reconciliation with God that leads to redemption/salvation, and regeneration.
B. Revelation: The work of Christ brings about the revelations of hidden mysteries of God’s glory to the believers in Christ, (Colosians1:26-27), such revelations include that of the accommodation of human races outside the common wealth of Israel.
C. Retentive: The application of the work of Christ is all en-compassing, it is not limited to when we are alive on the surface of the earth, it goes beyond the earth, to underneath the earth, and up to heaven, (Colossians1:20).
III. THE PROPAGATION OF HIS WORK
The propagation of the work of Christ is an essential duty for every believer in Christ. It must be done in season, and out of season (2Timothy 4:2).
A. Every believer is an agent /steward of propagation of the work of Christ, Paul declared that he became the minister of the gospel of Christ, which obviously after his conversion (Colossians1:23).
B. In fulfilling the mandate, every believer must learn to be joyful no matter the circumstances. Colossians 1:24
C. The propagation of the gospel must be done passionately and prayerfully (Colossians3:1-2).
CONCLUSION: The work of Christ brought about the reconciliation of human race to God; it is meant to help the believers as we strive on until we are presented to God in perfection. The work of Christ gives every believer access to God. In appreciation of the work of Christ, every believer must render him/herself as an agent of propagation of the work of Christ.

THE Work Of CHRIST (Colossians 1:19-2:3)
1. The Description of Of His Work
The description of Christ'work manifests in his gracious work of reconciliation between God and man. Thus, from the earliest time , right from the creation , man has severed his relationship with his creator through his wilful and flagrant disobedience to His ordinances. God from time to time, sends his prophets to warn the Israelites to desist from their wayward ways; but they didn't listen. Consequently, this led to the severity in the relationship between God and man, until Jesus was used as a sacrifice of atonement for our sins, and reconciled us back to God.
2. The Application of His Work (1:21- 23)
The work of redemption was made manifest through his suffering and death on the cross , so that he could present man to God holy, sanctified and unblemished.
3. THE Propagation. Of His Work ( 1:24- 2:3)
The message of hope which Paul Apostle expressly preached is all about mystery of riches in glory which God Almighty had revealed to the Gentiles. He is the hope of glory. This mystery has been hidden from ages and generations which non- Jews did not have access to . In order to be a partaker, Paul warned the Colossian church to work in God's wisdom so as to be presented in Christ, a perfect church.
The beauty of the message of hope in Christ is that all treasures of wisdom and knowledge are embedded in Jesus Christ.
These treasures belong to those who accept Him as their personal Lord saviour.
In conclusion, every human must know that everything he or she needs in life is embedded in Christ Jesus , so, man must accept Him and embrace the works of salvation which He has done through the precious Price he paid on the cross.

TOPIC:THE WORK OF CHRIST
TEXT:COL.1:19-2:3
OUTLINE: INTRODUCTION
This will deal only with the Work of Christ."For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in the Son"Col.1:19. He then moves from the description of the person of Christ to a powerful declaration of the work of Christ,by which God reconciled all things to Himself.God purpose is not just to bring us into an eternal relationship with him in the eternal future, but into a vital life transforming fellowship in this life.
1.THE DESCRIPTION OF HIS WORK (1:19-20).
A.THE SON'S WORK IN RELATION TO GOD(COL. 1:19):"For" is the reason why Son is Supreme in the new Creation. "For In Him God was pleased".This is followed by two declarations regarding what God was pleased to do."Fullness" to refer to the fullness of deity, that in Christ, the incarnate son,was the very fullness of God,all the qualities of God's divine essence and the fullness of God's plan of Reconciliation.
B.THE SON'S WORK IN RELATION TO ALL CREATION (COL.1:20):Jesus Christ is the sole means of Reconciliation and His Death on the Cross the sole method that God has chosen to use.It is the finished and whole work of God through Jesus Christ by which man is brought from the place of enmity to harmony or peace with God.
2.THE APPLICATION OF HIS WORK (1:21-23)
A.PAST ALIENATION DESCRIBED(1:21):The alienation and enmity has to do with their relationship to God, but the connecting can be understood to mean even enemies.
B.THEPRESENT RECONCILIATION ACCOMPLISHED (1:22A):The emphasis is God's purpose and plan of Sanctification (spiritual growth and transformation) for them as reconciled people. Jesus is the only one perfectly qualified to represent us and deal with our sin problem by dying in our place.
C.THE PURPOSE AND OBLIGATION OF RECONCILIATION DESCRIBED (COL. 1:22B): The purpose of God's work of reconciliation in Christ through the Cross is Holiness. "Holiness" refers to the state or quality of being Holy. The Holy person in the biblical sense is one who is set apart to God from the World. The Lord is deeply concerned about the Holiness of His people. He does not save us so we can live as we please.
D.THE CAUTIONARY CONDITION DISCLOSED (COL.1:23):The first class condition "if".The Negative warning is "without shifting from the hope of the gospel you heard". So there is a danger of not being presented before the Lord at the Bema as mature believer's whose lives have been consistent in the process of spiritual growth or Christ.
3. THE PROPAGATION (PROCLAMATION) OF HIS WORK (COL.1: 24 - 2:3).
A.The Mental Attitude Needed:(Col. 1:24)
B.The Mission or Mandate Given:(Col.1:25);
C.The Make-up of the Message Proclaimed;
D.The Method of Proclamation:(Col.1: 28a).
E.The Means of Proclamation:(Col. 1:29).
F.The Model for Proclamation:(Col2:1-3).
CONCLUSION
The Person and Work of Christ are complete and perfect, if anyone or any teaching seeks to add to or take away something from Christ's person and His Work, then it is a counterfeit, pure and simple. The purity of the message they had believed and encourages them to remain steadfast to that message, for in this way and this way only, they could attain spiritual maturity, receive rewards for faithful service, and bring glory and praise to God when they stand before the Lord Jesus at the Judgment or Bema Seat of Christ.

SHORT SERMON
TOPIC: THE WORK OF CHRIST
TEXT: Col. 1: 19 – 2: 3
Introduction
In the beginning God created man as a perfect being. Our first parents were created holy and sinless, but with an ability to choose. In the Garden of Eden, our first parents chose to rebel against God’s rules. And, it was this sin that made the Cross necessary.
Description of His work
The Almighty creator, God the Son, became flesh for the sake of humanity.
This God/Man lived a perfect life going about doing good.
The perfect Lamb of God demonstrated His power over nature, sin, Satan, disease, and death through various signs and wonders.
He was arrested, beaten, tortured, convicted in a kangaroo court, and hung on a cross for humanity.
The sinless substitute took our sin upon Himself, suffered the equivalent of eternal hell, and laid down His own life for man.
The death sentence due to man for his sin (Romans 6: 23) was taken over by the Saviour on the cross of Calvary.
This Fountain of life arose from the dead thus conquered death and perfected the work of salvation of mankind.
This is the work of our Saviour on the Cross - the work of restoration, redemption and reconciliation, Col. 1: 13-14, 20-22.
The essence of Christianity therefore is the cross of Christ. For He made peace through the blood of His cross, by Him to reconcile all things unto Himself, Col. 1: 20a
Application of His work
By the work of salvation perfected on the cross of Calvary, man became free from the consequence of sin.
Once a sinner has now been washed clean in the blood of the Redeemer.
We can now appear before Him stainless if we stand firm in faith, Col. 1: 21-23.
We have assurance of eternal life, John 3: 16b.
Propagation of His work
Jesus in His valedictory message to the Disciples and by implication the church, commissioned them to preach the Gospel, the Good News, Faith in Christ Jesus, to the whole world starting from Jerusalem - our immediate environment, to the uttermost part of the world.
He gave assurance of possession of Holy Spirit and power, Acts 1: 8.
He gave assurance of His presence with us as we carry out the mandate, Mathew 28: 20b.
The much awaited second coming of the Messiah will only come up after the good news had been preached throughout the world, Mathew 24: 14.
It is not the intension of God that any man should perish but desire that all should come to repentance and be saved, II Peter 3: 9.
It is the duty of the church to preach the gospel to every man, warning and teaching every man in all wisdom, so as to present them perfect in Christ Jesus, Col. 1: 28.
Conclusion
Jesus Christ is the way, the truth and the life. No one can come unto the Father except through Him, John 14: 6. He perfected the work of salvation. This is the Good News.
Reward awaits those who diligently carried out the mandate. Crown of rejoicing awaits the soul winners, I Thessalonians 2: 19.

Assignment 2: Brief Sermon
TOPIC: THE WORK OF CHRIST
TEXT: COLOSSIANS 1:19-2:3
OUTLINES
1. The Description of His work
2. The Application of His work
3. The Propagation of His work
INTRODUCTION
Redemption God's ultimate plan. He
has decided this right from the foundation of the world in the which He knew that man would surely disappointed him. The sacrificial work of Christ in His Death was applied to save all man from the Adamic sin. The saved were used as channel to proclaim, spread the work of the cross for the redemption of all humanity.
1. The Description of His work could be examined thus:
a. His Birth: The birth of Christ was miraculous. This is as a result of His divine nature. This has been prophesied by a prophet thus "Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign: behold a virgin shall conceive and bear you a son and shall call Emmanuel...( Isa. 7:14). The prophesy fulfilled as recorded in (Mathtew 1:18-20).
b. His Death: God's love is different than natural human love. When Jesus died, He died for the ungodly, for sinners and for His enemies. His death is significance for our salvation. Apostle Paul writes "For one will scarcely die for a righteous-though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die. But God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
c. His Resurrection: The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the foundation of the christian faith. Without the resurrection, the belief in God's saving grace through Jesus is in vain. Paul writes "And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain (1 Cor. 15:14).
2. The Application of His work
Christ's redemption work is applicable to:
1.save man from sin
2.Reconcile man back to God. Jesus died and he said it is finished. He has broken down the wall of partition between us and our God.
3. Justify man's conscience through through faith. We received the spirit of justification from God the His(Christ) death.
4. Adopt man as sons of God. We are no longer servants but sons and daughters of the living God and fellow heirs of His promise.
5. Eternal life in the father's kingdom.
3. The Propagation of His Work
The work of Christ is made known all man in His fullness. The proclamation of His kingdom as commanded by the Great Commission "Go ye..." . The following are evidences
* Rejoicing in suffering
* The mission Mandate given - a servant to fully proclaim the Gospel
* Make-up of the message proclaimed: the unveiled Mystery- Christ in you the hope of glory.
* The method of proclamation: Admonishing and teaching every person
* The motive in Propagation: to present every person mature in Christ.
CONCLUSION
Above all that beckons to us and tempts us to shift our focus from the fully sufficient Christ, Colossians invites believers worldwide to funnel all their desires and affections onto him. All that is worth having is found in Christ.

TEXT: COLOSSIANS 1:19-23 NKJV.
INTRODUCTION:Every believer is a product of what Christ has done. He is our Genesis and the conclusion of everything we are about. Without the mission of the Cross our testimonies are but empty powerless stories; But for all He did we can boldly say, we are, the children of God. Hallelujah!

His work is that of reconciliation of the lost man with the Father.
Christ served as the bridge between Divinity and Humanity.

The application of His work brought a full revelation of the Love of the Father to Humanity and is the beginning of brotherly love among brethren.
C. THE PROPAGATION OF HIS WORK.
This is the part of you who have been saved, running to help others to be saved just like you. After all, ours is the story of love and hence, we share it abroad ensuring that even the coldest of men, can feel and have this love.
CONCLUSION: Christ is the beginning and the end of every revelation you await in God. You must relentlessly run to ensure that you don't waste all He has done by sitting hands and head down; instead you are to impress it upon every heart in the world, starting from the next person to you.

The Work of Christ
Text: Colossians 1:19-2:3
INTRODUCTION
The work of reconciliation that took place on the cross was done out of the deepest love that God has for man. He sent His only begotten Son, who is not in any way lower than Him but God Himself to come and sacrifice Himself for the reconciliation and restoration of mankind. It can only take an absolute love which only God Himself can explain to do this.
OUTLINE:
THE DISCRIPTION OF HIS WORK
THE APPLICATION OF HIS WORK
THE PROPAGATION OF HIS WORK
A BRIEF SERMON:
The work of atonement that Jesus did on the cross was complete. It covers all that is needed for man to be saved. However, it is necessary to know that man also has his own role to play and that is to believe in Jesus (John3:16; Rom. 10:9-10). Hence, Col.1:20 is not an endorsement for universalism. Though, God has by Him reconciled all to Himself and through the blood that was shed brought us peace; this must not be taking literal in the sense that if it were to be the literal blood that save the Roman Soldier that performed the execution would have been saved first because of the stain of Jesus’ blood on them. “And you, who were once alienated…”vs21 every man who are of the lineage of Adam are naturally born alienated, that is separated, isolated and transferred to another owner which is devil and self. His death on the cross restored us, reconciled us, translated us and brought us a change of status. We are now presented blameless and pure in Christ.
“Him we preach, warning every man and teaching in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus” vs28. The goal here is to bring every man up to maturity through a careful teaching; imparting the understanding of this mystery which is hidden from ages and is now revealed to us the saints. The teaching work is not an easy work; it is not for the lazy ones. Paul did not go about his work half heartedly, hoping for grace to cover the rest which he was lazy to cover. We must do everything possible to get ourselves prepared to lay this very truth on the mind of others.
CONCLUSION
Every man must understand and accept the work of Christ on the cross. This must be well propagated by the saints. To bring up to maturity is the work every Christian must be fully involved and it cuts across every stratum of our lives as a Christian.

SUMMARY OF THE BOOK OF COLOSIANS:
1.Colossians was one of the books written by Paul, who is the author in prison in Rome in AD. 60 -61.
2.The book shows the supremacy, all sufficiency, uniqueness and the fullness of the person and work of Jesus Christ as the God-man Saviour.
3.It shows the Creator and Sustainer of the universe and also the Redeemer and Reconciler of man and the entire universe.
4.It emphasizes Jesus Christ as the image of the invisible God who is the firstborn over all creations. Col 1:16 confirmed it that all things on earth and heaven are created by Him, whether visible or invisible, whether thrones or dominions, whether principalities or powers.
5.It was revealed in the book that Jesus Christ was the head of the body which is the church because God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him that was why he was the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead.
6.His son, Jesus Christ would be made to reconcile things to himself through his blood on the cross whether things on earth or in heaven.
7.It was also revealed that we should be careful of empty, deceitful philosophy that is in line with human judgment and elemental spirit of the world and not of Christ
8.It made known to us that in Christ the fullness of deity lives in bodily form and we have been filled with him who is the head of every ruler and authority.
9.This explained that since we have been raised with Christ, we should always seek things above where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
10.In all, our thoughts should be on things above not things on the earth because we are dead and our life is hidden with Christ in God.

INTRODUCTION:
Anybody saddled with responsibilities for an assignment would have had a knowledge and understanding of the role he or she is going to play in the dissemination of the assignment and being accountable for the aftermath of the given assignment. We can see these roles performed in the specific and unique work of Christ. We can see in specific the distinct roles he played in the following outline:
I. THE DESCRIPTION OF HIS WORK. Col. 1:19-20
A person cannot be fully involved in a specific assignment if he or she is not well equipped, capable and ready for the task. Christ, being the son of the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For all things in heaven and on earth were created by him and for him, whether visible or invisible, thrones, dominions, principalities or powers. He is before all things and all things were held together in him.we This can also be described more in the two headings:
A. The Distinct Personality of Him and His Authority. Col 1:19
Based on his personality, God was pleased with him to have all his fullness dwells in him. This was demonstrated in the supremacy of Christ as the one who can do the assignment.
B. The Detailed-Specification of His Role and Responsibility. Col 1:20
He is saddled to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. Since the day man fell in the Garden of Eden by disobeying God, it has been so difficult to see anyone to reconcile man back to God, which was why Christ accepted to take up the responsibility.
II. THE APPLICATION OF HIS WORK. Col 1:21-23
It has been cleared now distinctively that Christ has fully accepted his role to shed his blood for humanity and we can see below how he applied his work for man so that we can be saved:
A. The Acknowledgement of Our Sinful Position in God. Col. 1:21
Before we can be accepted and incorporated into the full redemptive purpose , we need to acknowledge our sins as in reference to what the Scripture stated in Col. 1:21 that ‘‘Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behaviour’’ we definitely need help from Him who is saddled to do the work.
B. The Acceptance and Dissimilation of the Work. Col. 1:22
Based on the state of hopelessness that we have, God now reconciled us by Christ’s physical body through death to present us holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation. Christ work is to reconcile us back to God since we have been separated from God from the Garden of Eden. Christ took it upon himself to lay his life and shed his blood as a reconciliatory sacrifice in order to present us holy in God’s sight.
III. THE PROPAGATION OF HIS WORK. Col 1:23
Having received the undeserving grace of God through Christ, we need to guide jealously our faith; this can also be explained in the manner below:
A. The Pronunciation and Affirmation of His Works in Us. Col 1:23a
Apostle Paul admonished us that we should continue in our faith in Christ, established and firm in Him. We should also remain steadfast and held on to the hope of the Gospel which we have received in Christ Jesus.
B. The Proclamation of Him to Others. Col 1:23b
Christ reconciled us back to God and gave us the ministry of reconciliation as an ambassador for Christ to preach salvation and bring the dying world to the knowledge of Christ. We can see this in the Scripture stated by Paul in Col 1:23b that ‘‘this is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven and of which I, Paul, have become a servant’’
CONCLUSION:
In all, our thoughts should be on things above not things on the earth because we are dead to this world and our life is hidden with Christ in God.

Title: The Work of Christ
Text: Colossians 1:19-2:3
Outline
1. The Description of His work
2. The Application of His work
3. The Propagation of His work
Introduction
God has pleasure in restoring mankind back to Himself after the fall of man. Presence of sin in man caused a wide separation between God and man. God’s requirement is that after repentance from sin, there is a need for atonement through the shedding of blood. The blood of animals is not able to perfectly purge sin of mankind because sin came into man through a man called Adam, and atonement must be done through another man not animal.
1. Description of His work (Colossians 1:19-22)
Mankind become God’s enemies through sin. Jesus Christ came to the world to make peace through the death of His cross. His death brought God and all things together, whether things on earth of things in heaven, to present mankind holy, un-blamable and unreprovable in His sight.
2. The Application of His Work (Colossians 1:23)
Faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, is a necessity for pardon of sin and total cleansing. Faith in Christ come through the gospel message that present the person and the work of Jesus Christ as the savior of mankind and this must be preached to every creature.
3. The Propagation of His Work (Colossians 1:24- 2:3)
This begins with the church and believers fulfilling the word of God through preaching, warning every man about God’s impending wrath and judgment upon sinners. Presenting man perfect in Christ through teaching in all wisdom. Spiritual parents need to follow up their spiritual sons and daughters, showing them love, care and affection for them to remain in Christ.
Conclusion
Jesus came to save sinners and those saved should work for the salvation of others through preaching of the gospel of Christ.

Today we consider what God has done for us through His beloved Son. Remember, we have redemption, have been delivered from the power of darkness. Topic : The Work of Christ
Text: Col.1:19 - 2:3
Introduction
In Genesis, after man was creating by God, there was a cordial relationship between God and man. In Genesis 3 this cordial relationship was broken when man disobey God by eating the forbidden fruit. This simple disobedient led to the sending of man out of the garden of Eden. Since then, man have been trying all things possible to come back to God and he has being failing so God decided to put the relationship back by send Jesus Christ to the world and perform the work that is necessary for man’s salvation.
I. The Description of His Work (1:19 – 20)
A. In the fullness of God (1:19): The nature of work that can bring salvation to mankind is not the type a man can do on his own without the help of God. The major reason man has been failing in appealing to God it because is man can not save man. It is only God that can save man. So, God was please to have His fullness dwell in Jesus because this is what is required for the magnitude of work required for the salvation of man.
B. In reconciling Man to God (1:20): The main purpose of salvation is to reconcile man to God. The relationship between God and man was broken by man. The work of Christ is to amend the relationship and He does this through the blood He shed on the cross. The death of Jesus reconciled us to God.
II. The Application of His Work (1:21 – 23)
A. New Life in Christ (1:22): We were enemies and stranger to God due to our evil actions. We had no good works that pleases God so we are far away from God. Christ came and reconciled us to God through His death and to present us to God as holy, blameless and faultless. The work of Christ gives us a new life since all our sins has been taking away by His death. so as Christians we all have a new life in Christ.
B. New Faith in Christ (1:23): Not only the death of Christ has brought us new life in Him, it has also brought new faith to us. We now have faith and believe that as long as we are still in Christ our relationship cannot be broken.
III. The Propagation of His Work (1: 24 – 2:3)
A. The Revealing of the hidden mystery of Christ (1:26-27): The mystery of Christ that had been hidden from ages had now been reveal to the saints. The saints have the responsibility to reveal this mystery to all mankind for the benefits of all.
B. The Proclaiming of the message of Christ (1:28): The hidden mystery has now been reveal to all mankind. Proclaiming the knowledge or this mystery is the responsibility of all who came to the knowledge of Christ. We are all saved to save others.
Conclusion:
The work of Jesus Christ is a complete work and is for the perfection of the universe, so we as Christians have the responsibility to proclaim this good news to all mankind.

4. The fullness of everything is in Christ either things on earth or in heaven
5. We need Christ as a believer to be complete

7. Key words are supremacy and sufficiency
8. He is the image of the invisible God and the first born before all creation
9. He is the ruler over all the rulers and authorities

B. The Work of Christ (Col. 1:19-2:3)
Introduction
1:19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in the Son (Jesus Christ). “For” is introducing the reason why the Son is supreme in the new creation. His supremacy is found not only in Who He is in His person but in God’s purpose to provide salvation totally through the reconciling work of the Son.
A. The Description of His Work
Reconciliatory & Restoration (1:20-22). Sin wreck the world and all that is in it. However, Christ has reconciled us back to God through the shedding of His blood. This reconciliation for all human race. Adam and Eve fell in the garden of Eden and the God’s glory departed from mankind since then. Christ has come to reconcile man back with his creator. Reconciling us back with father (God) is not sufficient, but also restore man to his original position with father (God) where he can enjoy Him again as father to son. We can now approach God only through Jesus who is the incarnate Word. Through the sacrificial blood of Jesus, we have been restored back as we were before the fallen in the garden of Eden (i.e. into the eternal presence of God).
B. The Application of His Work (v. 21-23)
1. Faith
Enjoying His (Christ) work, we must have a strong and genuine faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Our faith must be strong, firm, grounded and rooted in Christ. We must also grow in this faith.
2. Firm
We must have a solid and an unyielding ground against anything that is not of Christ. Our stand must be known. “No compromise”.
We must be firm in the Lord, firm in faith. During temptations and tribulations we must be firm. In doctrine and hope. Also in the practice of good.
3. Hope
Hope must be practice, by this we would not give up. This hope is called a superior hope because it goes beyond our imagination; it reserves us for heaven it also helps us to operate in holiness and purification. It is indescribably marvelous and encourages us.
C. The Propagation of His Work (v. 24-2:3)
1. Preaching The Gospel
We must preach the gospel to every creature. Christ and the cross were preached to the world that was known to his readers by the time Paul wrote this letter. The gospel is the good news about Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for the sins of the world. The resurrection for the hope of those who seek eternal life.
We must reveal the mystery of reconciliation of man back to God which has been hidden from the mind of men since the creation of the world.
2. Practice What we Preach
Preaching it is not sufficient, we must also live it. We must be obedient to His word and commandments. By Christ living in the heart of the obedient, His salvation is manifested to the unbelieving world. We must be in unity in the body and love as a Christian because this is what binds us together.
Conclusion
We are living in days like we’ve never seen before. These are days of obligation to serve, even in the face of opposition, persecution but they are also days of opportunity. I believe you are aware of the day and desire to bring the best out of them! Are we prepared to stand for Jesus and share the gospel with those who need to hear? Are we committed to persistent in the faith although many are not? Are there needs in your life today? Are you the witness Christ would have you be? It is difficult to witness for Christ without a personal relationship with Him, which is available only through salvation in Him. If you have not given your life to Christ, I urge you to do that today.

ReplyDeleteTHEME: THE WORK OF CHRIST
ReplyDeleteTEXT: COL. 1:19; 2: 3
THE DESCRIPTION OF THIS WORK
Christ work was described as a reconciler of man to God. Since sin separated man from God and we were in enmity with God. Isa. 59:2 there is the need for us to be brought back to him on our creator and our father. Because our fullness dwell in him (Christ). Col. 1:19 we have peace through the blood of Christ shed on the cross. The blood of Christ is very important because it leads to God. Jesus Christ offered his life by shedding his blood. However, the blood speaks for us in the presence of God Heb. 12:24 its speaks better things than the blood of Abel. “So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many and unto them that without sin unto salvation” Heb. 9:28. Now, we that were alienated and enemies of God in our mind by wicked works, has been reconciled by his blood. Col.1:21.
THE APPLICATION OF HIS WORK
We apply the work of Christ into our self through faith in Him. Accepting the work of the cross, we apply His work. We can only enjoy the work of Christ, if we accept and belief his work. We are to be grounded and settled in faith, and not moved away from the hope of gospel (Col. 1:23). Our faith is to be without hypocrisy. Paul remembered the unfeigned faith of Lois, the grandmother and Eunice the mother of Timothy. Also has discovered same faith in Timothy. 2Tim. 1:5, that our faith should excel and be strong in faith, because without faith we cannot receive anything from God. However, we should grow in faith (2Thess.1:3).
THE PROPAGATION OF HIS WORK
Having applied the work of Christ by faith into our life, we will be enthusiastic to tell others. However, we are under compulsion to go and minister the work of Christ to the entire world Matt. 28:19-20. By propagating the work of Christ, we preach the gospel warning every man and teaching them. This will enable them to grow to maturity in his wisdom then be made perfect in Jesus Christ. This is what Paul was committed to, suffered and died for. The mystery which has been hidden from ages is made manifest to the saint by the entrance of the word of God, Col. 1:25-26. However, Paul realized the great work of Christ; he was consumed by striving hard according to power of God working mightily in him, about the church of God both in Colossae and Laodicea, to comfort them and bind them together in love. That they have full assurance in the knowledge of God and Christ, in whom lays all treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
However, we are to have full and completed understanding that everything we desire on earth to succeed is hidden in Christ (Col. 2:2-3).

INTRODUCTION
The fall of Adam as recorded in Genesis Chapter 3 make the beginning of woes for as he was separated from the living God. ReplyDeleteTOPIC: THE WORK OF CHRIST
TEXT: Colossians 1:19-2:3
INTRODUCTION:
This text is taken from the letter of Paul to the Colossians, one of his letters written while in prison at Rome, in which Paul opposed the Colossians' heresy of the false teachings. Paul, however, preferred concentrating on the complete adequacy of Christ, and disregarding the emptiness of human philosophy/heresy. As part of the focus on Christ exaltation, the text is considering the work of Christ.
I. THE DESCRIPTION OF HIS WORK - 1:19-20
A. Jesus Manifests the Fullness of God.
Fullness, pleroma, in Greek, can be interpreted as the totality of God with all His powers and attributes. The Gnostics believed that the pleroma was the realm wherein God existed, and argued that Jesus could not have come from the realm of God's existence, that Jesus who partook of the material world through His incarnation cannot be of the fullness of God, but rather an emanation who digressed from God. But Paul counter this erroneous belief (Col.2:9), that though Jesus emptied Himself in incarnation, kenosis, (Philip.2:5-7). He did not give up deity.
B. Jesus Reconcile to Himself all things.
The purpose of His work reached out to the effect of reconciliation of all things". Before Christ, we were alienated from God, which means that we were hostile to Him, rebellious, sinful enemies, completely separated from His presence. Yet the Lord created us to be united with Him in a deep, intimate relationship. So when we talk about being reconciled to God, we mean that our relationship with Him has been restored through Jesus' blood on the Cross.
II. THE APPLICATION OF HIS WORK - 1:21-23
A. Paul Emphasizes Atonement Through His Blood
Our redemption is through the blood of Jesus. It was His blood which made atonement. The blood is LIFE, and without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin, (Heb.9:22). There was such a value in the blood of Jesus, that, on account of Christ's shedding it, God was willing to deal with men on new terms to bring them under a covenant of grace. And in consideration of His death on the cross, to pardon and accept all who comply with them.
B. Paul Emphasizes Steadfastness in Faith.
Christ did actually enter into the life of man and worked out redemption as a historic fact in His body. The purpose was to present them at the end, holy and blameless. But this involves the responsibility of holding fast, not being drawn away by false teaching. The certainty of this divine promise offers no ground for human complacency, so continuity in the faith, therefore, is the condition upon which one's relationship with God is guaranteed.
III. THE PROPAGATION OF HIS WORK - 1:24-2:3
A. Preaching of Hope to a World Lost in Sin.
Paul has a divine office in the economy of God, as well as, contemporary Christians, that he may preach to the full, in order to unfold the mystery that is now revealed. That Gentiles with Jews may share in the wealth of His glorious manifestations that Christ should dwell in their hearts.
B. Preaching of Upright Living (Righteous Lifestyle)
Paul did not stop at preaching, but continued the work of instruction, even after their conversion, for his object is their spiritual maturity. He urges them that they did not receive mere tradition of words, but Christ Himself. As such, they must walk and live their way of life and thought in conformity to the way of Christ and centred in Him.
CONCLUSION
Jesus Christ was the fullness of God, who came to reconcile all things including human beings to God. He made atonement through His blood on the cross, and this sacrifice should not be taken for granted, but rather, we should live to jealously guard our faith. Just like Paul, we need to preach and tell others about Christ, and ensure they are fed and nurtured, so that they can stand the test of time, and thereafter, able to minister the Word of life to others.
THEME: THE WORK OF CHRIST

A brief sermon on the work of Christ
ReplyDeleteIntroduction
The book of colossians discusses the supremacy and preeminence of Jesus Christ over all things
The description of His work
Jesus was not only the agent who created all that exists, but he is also the agent of our salvation; (Colossians 1 v 19 - 20)" For it was by God's own decisions that the son has in himself the full nature of God. Through the son, then, God decided to bring the whole universe back to himself. God made peace through his son's blood on the cross and so brought back to himself all things, both on earth and in heaven".
God created all things through Christ, and he is reconciling those things back to himself through Christ. Christ was present at the creation and God's work in creation is Christ's work according to Paul.
The Application of His work
All of humanity were strangers and separated by sin from God the Father, but now through Christ's sacrifice, this torn and damaged relationship is mended and we have newness of life in God. Christ's death on the cross of calvary was the incredible act that made all these possible. Our salvation, Faith, Peace etc, through his bloodshed. He brought us into the presence of God; we are holy and blameless because of Christ. This is what Paul encourages us to apply in our daily lives for the continuation of the benefits we are enjoying in God's presence.
Propagation of His work
The gospel message, which centers in the nature of the person and work of Christ, is a universal message that must proclaimed far and wide because it is God's only plan of salvation for the entire world. Paul serves as a model for all believers to follow by laying down principles that are needed in proclaiming the good news of the saviour.
Conclusion
The Supreme Lord has personally undertaken the task of saving those who were condemned to death by sin. No amount of human effort could accomplish what the Supreme Lord has accomplished for us.

TOPIC: The Work of Christ
TEXT: Colossians 1:19-2:3
Introduction
Apostle Paul in his letter to the Colossians; he stressed what it means for believers to live in Christ. The Christian life is one of resilient gospel-centrality. Believers are new people and are therefore able to grow because we have been buried with Christ and resurrected with Christ and given a whole new self. Paul soars in majestic proclamation of Christ’s supremacy over creation in general and the church in particular (Col. 1: 18-20).
Outlines
1. The Description of His Work (1:19-20)
A. Dwelling in His fullness:
Jesus Christ bears the glory of God likewise all that GOD is dwells in Christ. In Old Testament after King Solomon had completed the temple and offered sacrifices in the temple the bible recorded that the fullness of God’s glory filled the temple.
B. Reconciliation through Christ atonement:
As the prince of peace, Jesus will ultimately defeat all rebellion against God. For believers, this means reconciliation to God as His friends. For nonbelievers and demonic powers, this means defeat by Christ, the conquering king. The basis for Christ’s reign of peace is the blood of his cross. The cross truly is the turning point in human and cosmic history.
2. The Application of His Work (1:21-23)
A. Previous state of our mind
Paul state the pre-Christian status of the Colossian, They were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deed. Their mind was once wicked and they were known for wicked works. The state of their minds was not godly before they came to the knowledge of Christ Jesus.
B. Present state of our mind
The present state of their minds had been renewed; they are now holy and blameless. This is the same language the Old Testament uses to describe the unblemished animals that priests brought for a sacrifice. The death of Christ and his sharing of his blood had reconciled to their maker. God want this for mankind.
3. The Propagation of His Work (1:24-2:3)
A. Spreading His work through preaching
Paul was able to propagate the gospel through preaching. The great commissioned in our hands must be done through any medium available around us. The place we meet ourselves and the type of the people will go long way to tell us how to reach out to them. This is a great challenge to all Christian that the preaching of this good news need to be done in order to bring positive change in people. No matter the suffering and difficulties the gospel must be preached.
B. Spreading His work through Teaching
One of the instructions given to us by our lord Jesus was “teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen”. This another effective of making people to have deep understand about Christ. Paul used this method to bring positive change in the life of the Colossians. Likewise we should the same.
Conclusion
We are part of this cosmic work of reconciliation, we are reconciled, and we are reconcilers. Your job and my job is not to defend God or Christian moral principles, to “circle the wagons” so-to-speak. Our job is to guide people in being reconciled.

TEXT- Col1:19-2:3
INTRODUCTION-God already had an alternative way of escape from the time man fell in the garden of Eden-protoevangelion(Gen 3 V 15). At the fullness of time, God sent His son to the world only to die for the sin of mankind, paid the debt with His precious blood and restored man back to God blamelessly.
1. THE DESCRIPTION OF HIS WORK
A. Deliverance from the power of darkness (col 1 V 13)
B. Translation into the kingdom of His dear son (Col 1 V 13)
C. Redemption through His Blood (Col 1V 14)
D. Forgiveness of sin (Col 1 V 14).
The summary of the work of Christ is that He came to deliver us from the power of darkness that had held us into bondage in ages past, pushed/ translated us into the kingdom of God,He redeemed us through His Blood and forgave us our sins.
B. THE APPLICATION OF HIS WORK-When we apply the work that Jesus had done for us on the Cross of Calvary, we get
A. RECONCILIATION: Col 1 V 21.His work make us who were once enemies of God to be His Friends again and we are united back to Him.
B. UNBLAMABLE: His work present us holy before Him and unreproveable. Then, we are free to express our minds, thoughts and feelings before Him with any guilt.
Col1 V 22.
C. THE PROPAGATION OF HIS WORK
Because Jesus had made peace through the Blood on the Cross in order to reconcile all things into Himself, we believers in Him should be bold to preach and propagate the Gospel because He is the head of the body which is the church and in Him dwells all fullness. Col 1 V 18 - 20. All these should give us sufficient and enough courage to propagate His work.
CONCLUSION: Christ has perfected the work of Redemption for us. It's left for us to fully embrace this, walk in the consciousness of this, stand firm on His work, do not allow the enemy the devil to intimidate us in any way and we should focus on Jesus our Lord only by being thankful to Him always.

1, The church at Thessalonica was founded by Paul and his co-workers timothy and Silas during the so-called second missionary in AD 5
2,This epistle was certainly written during Paul’s long stay at Corinth [act18:5,1thess3:6] the date can easily be fixed, an inscription discovered of Delphi refers to the proconsulate of Gallio position held for only two years Paul arrived at Corinth before Gallio assumed this position after planting this church the Jews rise against him, he move to Athens, from Athens Paul dispatched timothy to check on the situation in the Thessalonians church, 2thess3:17 written by me Paul
3,The situation that prompted Paul to write these two letter have been for their purposes, it is sufficient to say that Paul wanted to encourage believers who were trying struggles against thing such as idolatry and sexual immorality, they were also confessed about the end time ,the role of everyday work and the life of faith
4,The implication was that he was persecuted, when Paul brought the gospel to Thessalonica, the believer there had become the object of violence, enduring serious life threatening persecution
5,We do not want you to be ignorant brothers, about those who are sleeping, lest you grieve like the rest who have no hope. Paul assured the Thessalonians, that although the departed saints had died physically. They were still alive with Christ and they would accompany Christ when he returned
6,The lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout from heaven into this our air, the appearance will be with pomp and power, with a shout by the trump of God for the trumpet shall sound, the dead shall be raised before those who are found alive at Christ coming shall be changed
7,Christ was presented as our soon coming king to the audience today, Jesus was the only hope that we have we should be focus and be alert for the second coming of Christ because very soon he will come like thief in the night
8,My study about I Thessalonians in reacting to those who instill fear the message in the book of Thessalonians was a message of hope , confidence, the message was so clear that believer should get ready at anytime and be focus because Jesus is coming back again, in whatsoever will may be doing we should be conscious of this truth that very soon he will come IIThessalonian2:1-
9,The relationship between the key concept sanctification for the coming of Christ. Sanctification mean to sanctify someone or something, to set that person or thing apart for the use intended by its designer, we are to sanctify ourself for the coing of our Lord Jesus Christ
10,My impression about that church in Thessalonians was that they keep to instruction , and obey the word of God not even false prophet when apostle Paul enlighten them about false teaching that was disturbing the land they adapt and move forward
Lesson to learn from the
-The church that makes an impact
-Effective discipleship
-Christian evangelism to spread gospel
-Christian ministry how pastor serve both the gospel
-Christ behavior how the church must live
-Christian hope how the gospel should inspire the church
-Christian community

ReplyDelete1. The early church support Paul's authorship as early as A. D. 140
2. Both internal and external evidence supports the claim that the book was written by Paul. Internal evidence says the things that characterize Paul are evidence throughout (cf. 3: 1-2, 8-11 with acts 15: 36; 2cor 11: 28). a number of historical allusion in the book fit Paul's life as recounted in acts and in his own letter. Another evidnce is(some radical critics of the nineteenth century) hqv ever questioned Paul authorship
3. It was written during the earlier part of that period after Timothy had return from Thessalonians with the news of the project of the church
4. To express his thankfulness for what God was doing in the lives of the Thessalonians (1: 2-3), To defend himself a campaign to slander his ministry (2: 1-12), to encourage them to stand fast against persecution and pressure to revert to their former pagan lifestyle (3: 2-3; 4: 1-12), to answer questions regarding the "Day of the Lord", (5: 1-11), and to deal with certain problems that had developed in their corporate life as a church (5: 12-13; 19-20).
5. Paul used those that has fallen asleep as euphemism for death. Paul is saying that those people that they don't have Christ when they die., they will not see Christ, but for believers that dies in Christ are asleep And they shall rise again with Christ
6. For the lord himself will come down from heaven with a shout of command, with the voice of arch angel, and with the trumpet
Of God, and the dead in Christ will arise first 4: 17. Then we who are are alive, who are left, will be snatched up together with them in the clouds to meet the lord in air. And so we will be with the lord always 4: 18 therefore encourage one another with these words
7. Christ is presents as the believer's hope of salvation both now and at his coming
8. We should encourage christan to steadfast in the lord. Paul said we should comfort one another with these word (1thess 4: 18). The secoming of Jesus should be used to encourage christian that these sinful world will soon end because Christ has come to this world to come and die for their sin and it is only in Jesus that they can make heaven.
9. Chapter4 and 5 undoubtedly stand out as key chapter because of their teachingon both the coming of the lord for the church, the rapture(4: 13-18) , and the day of the lord(5: 1-11), the time in the future when He will intervene in human events to consummate His redemption and judgment
10. Leson to learn from a contemporary church is that they should remain in the lord because the coming of the lord is near and they live a godly life
